Ram pickup beats Silverado as Stellantis US sales drop 2% in 2021

The Ram pickup topped sales of the Chevrolet Silverado in 2021 for the second time, despite parent company Stellantis NV’s sales declining 2% for the year from 2020.

Ram sold 569,388 pickup trucks, up 1%, in 2021. Chevrolet sold 529,765 Silverado trucks, down almost 11%. General Motors Co., however, has consistently sold more trucks than Ram with an additional 248,924 GMC Sierra, down 1.6%.

Ram topped the Silverado for the last time in 2019, as GM ramped up production of a new generation of Chevrolet pickup trucks. Last year, a global shortage of microchips hit the industry, slowing assembly plants and forcing automakers like GM to produce and then hold trucks while waiting for rare parts.

Stellantis ended the year selling nearly 1.8 million vehicles, with nearly 412,000 transactions occurring in the fourth quarter, down 18% year-on-year.

“2021 has seen unique challenges related to different supply chain issues, but our dealers haven’t let them slow down, and we’re proud of their business performance,” said Jeff Kommor, US Sales Manager of Stellantis, in a press release. . “As we head into the new year, demand for our vehicles continues to be strong and our inventory improves. We expect strong demand and sales volumes to continue through 2022 with our existing and new products. “

Overall, the results put Stellantis behind GM, which sold 2.2 million vehicles in 2021, down 13% from 2020. Ford Motor Co. will release its fourth quarter and full year sales on Wednesday. complete. The Blue Oval had sold 1.7 million vehicles in the United States until November.

Stellantis stressed that retail sales, which it prioritized over the fleet, were stable for the year. Fleet sales fell 13%, although 2021 was a record year for commercial sales across the portfolio, up 35% year-over-year.

Ram and Chrysler both increased sales in 2021 by 4% each. Jeep and Alfa Romeo fell by 2%, Dodge by 19% after the shutdown of the Grand Caravan and Journey, and Fiat by 45%. All brands fell a double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter, except Chrysler, whose sales were up 18% year-over-year.
