MHS students work to offset school paper use by planting saplings

Since the week of January 2, Tree-Plenish has partnered with over 450 schools, including Midland High School, to help build sustainable communities through youth engagement.

Midland High plans to plant 254 saplings on April 22 to offset its school’s paper consumption for one school year.

Tree-Plenish takes students through a step-by-step process to achieve their ultimate goal: to organize their own tree planting event. With the help of Tree-Plenish, students calculate their school’s paper consumption. In order to reach their sapling goal, students rely on community residents to order saplings to be planted by volunteers in their yard.

Throughout the winter and early spring, students and schools plan their tree planting activities. The students begin marketing their event to the community in January, with the goal of getting residents to order a sapling to plant in their yard on the day of the event. This process of ordering saplings continues until about a month before the event takes place to allow time for saplings to be ordered and delivered. Students also reach out to their community to recruit volunteers to help plant saplings on the day of the event. These events are a perfect opportunity for community members to stay connected and involved during the Covid-19 pandemic. Tree-Plenish has created specific guidelines to protect both community residents and event volunteers.

Community residents can help support the event from now on. They can order a sapling to plant in their yard or sign up to volunteer to plant saplings on the day of the event. The more residents who request saplings, the faster the students reach their goal. If residents are unable to order a sapling or donate their time, they can also make a monetary contribution through the Tree-Plenish website to help support future tree planting events.

Tree-Plenish is a student-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that strives to build sustainable communities through youth engagement. Together with students from Midland High School, Tree-Plenish hopes to lead Midland towards a sustainable future.
