Megapipes launches into the production of wastewater treatment plants

Megapipes Solutions has started producing lightweight waste water treatment tanks at its factory in Ruiru, Kenya. The Nairobi-based plastic pipe maker is targeting high-density users in commercial and residential properties with the new venture.

According to the company, the new treatment plants are manufactured using Weholite technology and will serve between 25 and 1,000 users with a service life of more than 100 years. Megapipes said the cost of its plants starts at US$250 for the smallest unit.

Weholite pipes and tanks are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and are also used for water distribution, road and rail culverts.

“The packaged plants, which will be manufactured at the Megapipes plant, will enable the safe treatment of wastewater and wastewater discharged from high-density residential, industrial, commercial, retail and hospitality properties,” said the company in a press release.

“Megapipes Solutions also targets property developers and users who want to reduce maintenance costs such as extraction fees, as these plants only need to be emptied once or twice a year, reducing demand on municipal treatment facilities and reduces operating costs for the owner.”

Many Kenyan buildings, especially apartment buildings that have sprung up in areas that were once single-family homes, tend to overwhelm existing sewage systems, forcing developers to install septic tanks to manage waste.

New suburbs in Nairobi metropolitan areas do not have sufficient sewerage and water supply coverage. The high costs of maintaining a sewer connection have forced many households to avoid connecting to sewer lines or make illegal connections.

The new sewage treatment plants are expected to solve the problems related to sewage management in Nairobi and its suburbs.

Weholite is at the forefront of technology innovation and development and Megapipes Solutions has proven the technology to be not only durable but reliable in various applications including the deployment of Weholite DN1500 HDPE pipe for sander roads.
