The Department of Petroleum Resources sealed 30 gas stations and eight liquefied petroleum gas outlets for various offenses in Akwa Ibom.
DPR state operations controller Victor Ohwodiasa said this during an interview with Nigeria’s news agency in Eket, the seat of the state’s Eket local government area on Thursday.
Ohwodiasa said LPG gas stations and outlets have been sealed for offenses ranging from under-distribution, operating without a valid sales and storage license, poor maintenance, improper location and illegal activities in the state.
“I can tell you with authority that we have sealed 30 gas stations and eight gas outlets for operating illegally in the state.
“We can’t continue to allow illegality because we don’t need an accident to happen first, we just need to be proactive instead of reactive.
“It will be an ongoing fight because people are under stress due to environmental conditions, economic hardship, they want to cut corners and that’s why we have regulators to check them,” Ohwodiasa said.
He said the sealed gas stations were located in the state’s Eket, Uyo and Onna LGAs.
“We are developing a plan to reach the 31 LGAs in the state, passing through not only gas stations but also gas outlets so that they can feel our presence in the state,” Ohwodiasa said.
He said the ministry would be proactive in ensuring that gas retail outlets and gas factories operate under the safety procedures that govern the oil and gas industry.
