Burger King’s Impossible Nuggets to try in the Des Moines metro

Burger King is asking the largest city in one of the country’s largest meat-producing states to try its new plant-based nuggets.

The chain is rolling out Impossible Nuggets from October 11 in Des Moines, which will be a test market with Boston and Miami.

Burger King is the first major fast food chain to offer Impossible Nuggets, a plant-based rendition of chicken nuggets from Impossible Foods, which created the Impossible Whopper without meat for the chain in 2019.

The herbal Whopper finally made its debut in thousands of places across the country after a four-month test.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve teamed up with Impossible to make waves in the industry,” Ellie Doty, Burger King North America’s director of marketing, said in a statement. “So it’s only fitting that we are the first (fast food restaurant) in the world to test the Impossible Nuggets. We’re excited to hear what our customers in test markets think about this latest innovation. “

Miami-based Burger King has not announced pricing for the Impossible Nuggets, which will be sold in serving sizes of eight. But Impossible Food’s soy protein products typically command a significant premium over the meats they’re designed to look like. The Impossible Whopper, for example, sells for around 70% more than the standard Whopper.

The Impossible Nuggets are also making their debut in the frozen food section of supermarkets at $ 7.99 for a bag of 20, according to the International Business Times.

Although plant-based, Burger King’s Impossible Nuggets won’t be strictly vegan – they’ll be cooked in the same oil as the chain’s conventional meat and cheese products.

While vegetarian patties and nuggets have been around for decades. the new meatless alternatives that are designed to look and taste like the real thing have been sold even among non-vegetarians. Vox reports that they are becoming increasingly profitable for fast food and fast food chains as customers seek more sustainable and environmentally friendly choices.

Some chains with locations in Iowa that now have offerings from Impossible Foods or its direct competitor, Beyond Meat, include Subway, Quiznos, Dunkin ‘and Qdoba.

Not to be outdone, the largest burger chain, McDonald’s, makes a McPlant burger. She first tested her first plant-based burger, “designed for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s,” according to the company, in Canada in 2019.

Not everyone has been happy with the boom in replica meat. In 2020, the Iowa Pork Producers Association, representing Iowa’s premier pork industry, expressed its displeasure with Impossible Foods labeling its pork substitute as Impossible Pork.

“We have concerns about this because it’s not meat, it’s not pork,” a Radio Iowa spokesperson said.
